Reinhold Messner

The famous explorer, author and mountaineer was born in South Tyrol in 1944 and climbed his first three-thousander with his father at the age of five. He has been one of the most successful mountaineers in the world for over 30 years.

On completion of his studies to become a surveyor, he worked for a short time as a secondary school teacher before dedicating himself fully to mountain climbing. A life as a crosser of borders was to follow. Since 1969 he has undertaken over 100 trips in the mountains and deserts of the Earth. He has written dozens of books.

His expeditions have won him many first ascents, the climbing of all 14 eight-thousand-metre mountains, the "Seven Summits", the crossing of the Antarctic, the Gobi Desert and Takla Manan and the longitudinal crossing of Greenland.
Between his travels, Reinhold Messner spends his time in Merano and, especially during the summer months, at Juval Castle near Naturno where he oversees the mountain farms, writes and develops new ideas.

Unlike many modern-day adventurers, Reinhold Messner is far less interested in records than he is in exposure to preferably untouched lands and travelling with the minimum of equipment.

As TV Commentator and lecturer he is respected by Alpinists, tourism professionals and business leaders the world over. Following his term as an EU parliamentarian, Reinhold Messner can now dedicate himself fully to his Messner Mountain Museum (MMM) project and his foundation (MMF), which supports mountain peoples the world over.
