The Grape Cure
Farmers and their natural produce - Grapes from South Tyrol are full of natural goodness, too
South Tyrol has long had an enviable reputation for good wine. The Ancient Romans knew about the fine vineyards of the Rätia region and later, during the times of the Austria-Hungarian Empire, everyone who was anyone came to nearby Merano to partake of the highly recommended Grape Cure which was known to help in the treatment of a variety of ills. There has been an increase in the production of top-quality wines in the region in recent years and master wine makers, sommeliers and many enthusiastic guests praise the choice of wines the area produces from the typical fruity, fresh-tasting, very drinkable Vernatsch to one of the most well-known red wines, the more classic Lagrein as well as various other excellent red wines including St. Magdalener, Blauburgunder and Cabernet. Various local white wines are also highly quoted.
Various Naturno wine cellars open their doors to the public every Thursday for guided visits and the chance to taste some of their best wines.
Please remember::
Our locally-grown grapes produce fine wines and are also known for their health-giving properties. The fruit, which flourishes in the fertile valley soil and is ripened by the plentiful sunshine the region is so well-known for, is used for the traditional autumn Grape Cure which first became popular some 120 years ago. The large, sweet, dark red Merano Großvernatsch grapes with their thin skins and soft, juicy flesh are pressed to make a health-giving drink which helps cleanse the blood, improve the cell regenerative process and stimulate the liver and gall. They are also used in various beauty treatments for peeling, as grape-seed oil for body and facial massage and can be added to various curative baths.
Both grapes and wine are traditional ingredients of various health cures!
